UNIVERSITY

Varanasi has been considered an important seat of learning and education since ancient times. The city boasts of three full- ledged universities namely Banaras Hindu University, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University. Besides this two deemed universities, namely Safia Islamia and Central Institute for Tibetan Studies; two autonomous colleges, UP College and Agrasen Girls PG College, and several post-graduate and degree colleges impart higher education to thousands of students from across the country as well as international scholars. The Banaras Hindu University, one of the biggest universities of Asia, founded by Pt Madan Mohan Malviya , is a rare centre with three institutes, four- teen faculties and 124 departments. From studies in theology to training for rocket and missile engi- neers and the ceramics department, all are present in the same campus. BHU houses the prestigious Institute of Technology, Institute of Medical Sciences and Institute of Agriculture Sciences. Its faculty is well known for path breaking research work. The varsity has became a part of the culture of the city. The Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vldyapith, was founded by Mahatma Gandhi and Shiv Prasad Gupta on the call of patriots to boycott British run educational institutions in 1920. This university has become an important institute of learning in eastern UP. The Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, has had a major contribution in keeping Sanskrit alive. The establishment of a Sanskrit paathshala by Jonathan Duncan, a Britisher in Varanasi, in 1791, was a concrete step towards promoting the language. The university attracts Europeans and for-eigners keen to study sanskrit religion and philosophy. short-term language courses are also available here. the uiversity maintains a collection of 150000 rare and ancient manuscripts at its library. it is also a major cetre for research of oriental learning. several new schools have also come up in the city in the past few years providing excellent avenues for education. Varanasi has always been the centre of education in India.In puran and other literature Varanasi and Mithila were mentioned as the main centre of education. There are three Universities -B.H.U.,M.G.Kashi Vidya Pith and Sampoomanand Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya (For the study of Sanskrit )in Varanasi .Instead of these three, two deemed University-' Jamia Salfia', for the study of Arabic&Parasi language, and Tibetan University of Tibetees are also here.

Banaras Hindu University(B.H.U.):
The Banaras Hindu University,the largest residential university in Asia, is established in 1916 by Pt. Madan Mohan MalviyaThe University has 124 independent teaching departments ,14 faculties,one college—Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, 3 institutes—Institute of Technology,Institute of Medical Sciences and Institute of Agricultural science and 4 schools— school of Material Science,School of Biomedical Engineering,School of Biochemical Engineering and School of Biotechnology. The university has its own telecomunication setup,a press, a most modern computer network system,a musium of art and culture- Bharat Kala Bhavan ,the famous Lord Vishvanath temple and many other centres. The University is located on the western bank of river Ganga about 10 KMs from Varansi Cantt Railway Station and 19 KMs from nearby Mughalsari Jn. of Indian railway.

Mahatnia Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith:
Situated near cantt this university has many faculties and Department .It provides the study of social-works,which is taught only in two universities in U.P. Recentely department of Management studies and computer science has also opened in this University. Very soon department of medical science will opened (Up to yr 200) Uiversity has a rich library and a well- eqipped computer lab. Sampoornanand Sanskrit University:
This university is one of the few university in India, where the world's oldest language jSanskrit is taught.This university is the most renouned university in India for the study of Sanskrit. In this university Hindu culture and great Hindu epics-vedas and purans are taught..Study of astrology and Ayurveda in this university is very good. Architecture of the main building of university is very fine.There is a museum in this university, which is very rich in the sense of Hindu Culture.

Tibetan Institute
During the 1950s the Sino Tibetan discored finally dicimated the political freedom, religious istitution and culture of TibetanThe Tibetan people,since then have been griped with the anxity that if their legacy of the path and their heritage disappear they would lose their identity completely. Its was about the time when streams of Tibetan refugees crossed into India,Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru thus thought the establishing an Institution of national importance as a recomplense for the out ragious disservice to humanity done by China to Tibetan and also with a view to preserving the culture and tradition of the Tibetan people. Therefore in this way this institute was founded

Jamia Salfia
It was established in 1963 for promoting Arabic & Parasi language and literature. Its education level is from basics to M.A standard in Arabic language. It has its own printing press,a big liberary and computer dipartment.At present there are 3000 students there,hostel faciliteis is also here.
