Durga
Temple
This
18th century temple dedicated to Goddess Durga stands on a high
platform
within a quadrangular court twelve carved pillars suport the central
spirer the temple is flanked by a music gallery and a stepped tank.
In 1808, the Collector of Benaras, William James Grant presented the
temple one of the bells hanging in the porch after he was saved from
drowning by a boatman who invoked the goddess before the
rescue.
Tilbhandareshvar Mahadev
Off Madanpura road is a spartan
temple that houses a tall linga, over a
metre
high. The resident priest will toll you that it is still
growing by the height of a sesame seed or til. each day. During the
shivaratri festival
the linga is covered with a coper mask with five faces.
Tulsi Manas Temple
This
modern temple in marble is situated near
Durga Mandir. The walls are
inscribed with verses from Tulsi Das'
Rnmcharilmanas. The temple also has a museum that depicts, through
terracotta models, the exploits of Rama, as well as a rare collection of
around 150 Rantayana manuscripts
Sankat
Mochan Temple
Built
by the poet Tulsi Das, this temple is dedicated to the monkey god.
Hanuman. the spacious and shady precincts are popular venue for religious
discourses, fairs and an annual music festival.
